[ Helpful Tips about Magnesium Deficiency.]

Up to 75% of Americans don't get enough magnesium in their diet.Even the best multivitamin don't offer 100% of your daily need.

Add to that magnesium-depleting prescription drugs or a health condition that is associated with a magnesium deficiency - and serious health complications can occur.Medications including diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, used for acid reflux or heart burn, all deplete the body of magnesium.

Magnesium is essential to support healthy nerve and muscle function, help keep your heart rhythm steady, and help maintain normal blood pressure already with in a normal range*Magnesium also helps in the absorption of vitamin D,Calcium and Potassium* Plus magnesium is essential for normal energy metabolism as it helps convert carbohydrates, protein, and fat in to energy*It even helps support glucose metabolism*.

There is a good chance you may be deficient in magnesium;just one dose of doctor recommended MagOx(R)400 Magnesium per day delivers 120% of the daily value.

[ DO A DIABETIC FOOT EXAM ]

Even if you haven't really suffered from any diabetic complications,it is advised to check your feet on a weekly basis to detect on a weekly basis to detect any diabetes related symptoms of feet problems. Any loss of sensation or wounds should be taken care of.

Diabetic

foot inspection is not only significant to prevent development of diabetes caused wounds, but will guide you to schedule a follow up programme with your doctor in case your protruding belly is making it difficult for you to have a comprehensive examination of your feet, you may ask your caretaker to ( nurse or podiatrist )to volunteer.
Listed here are the instructions to a diabetic foot exam.

STEP 1. Position to diagnose your feet.
Clean and dry your feet before you start checking it. Sit on a chair hanging mid air .Lift one of your leg and place the calf on the knee of other leg. This way you can easily check your feet.Repeat the procedure on the other leg as well

STEP 2.Examine the bottom of your feet

Make sure the sole of the foot is visible to you . incase you cannot comfortably see your ankle use a mirror so that you can check its reflection. Here are the parts of your foot that have to be diagnosed for diabetic neuropathy or wounds on your feet.

Balls: Check for bumps, calluses,(corns) and irregular textures .Due to the high pressure extended on the feet balls while you walk, they become vulnerable o wounds, thus checking them time to time is a must.

SolesSole of a diabetic feet should be diagnosed for lumps, ulcers, and bumps on the skin.these can be indicative of injured nerves /muscles due ti soaring blood sugar level.

Heels Despite your constant moisturizing your feet if your feet are persistently hard and cracked it is advisable to bring it to your doctors notice. Fissures in the heels are infected, thus it is best to treat your skin the earliest

Between the Toes. The area between your toes is a warm and moist place, thus a favorable spot for bacteria to multiply it is best to check the area between the toes for small ulcers, bumps, or irregular texture of the skin.

STEP 3.Examine the top of your feet

If you find any sores, open wounds, bruises or calluses on the top of your feet, you should consult your doctor to learn the reason of the problem and also to get treatment as soon as possible.
You should also check your feet for possible signs of reduced blood flow. Some of its signs are temperature variation in the part of your feet, apparent changes in the skin of the feet or unexpected hairlessness.

[ eGlobal Natural Health.]

Dear SKGRao,
I hope you are having a great week! Today I would like to talk about a topic that may be uncomfortable for you, however it is a complication of diabetes that is not discussed often enough.
Diabetes and sexual dysfunction.
When you think about enjoying life and all its pleasures, great sex may be one of the first things to pop into your mind. The good news is that there's no reason you can't have a full and satisfying sex life if you have diabetes. However you need to understand how diabetes can affect different aspects of your sexuality and sexual function.
In woman NERVE DAMAGE to the cells that line the vagina can result in dryness, making sexual intercourse very uncomfortable. Discomfort is likely to decrease sexual response or desire.
Melabic and Neurabic have Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl - l Carnitine which help reverse nerve damage by helping to repair damaged tissue. To find out about these 2 ALL NATURAL diabetes fighting supplements.
Total Diabetic System.
As many as 40 percent of women with diabetes may experience decreased or absent interest in sexual relations. Decreased desire for sex, inability to become or remain aroused, lack of or no sensation in the genital area as well as the inability to reach orgasm can result.
Now MEN with diabetes, normal sexual function may be disrupted for a number of reasons related to nerve and blood vessel damage.
Diabetes can cause neuropathy or damage to nerves throughout your body, including the penis. Damaged nerves can't communicate properly. Even though you might be emotionally stimulated to have intercourse, nerve damage means that information isn't relayed to the penis, and an erection is not successful.
Blood vessels can also become narrowed or hardened (atherosclerosis) by conditions that often accompany diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease. When atherosclerosis occurs in arteries that supply the penis or pelvic area, sexual function may be disrupted.
The GOOD NEWS is that if we are aware of the importance of early treatment and keeping blood sugar levels balanced, you can avoid this awful side effect!!!
There is 2 things that will help you get this condition under control.
1. Control your Blood Sugar Naturally - Melabic - and its nine natural ingredients can help you with this.
2. Protect your nerves - Neurabic can help you protect your nerves and increase circulation to help eliminate sexual dysfunction in both men and women.
You can order these together and save on shipping by visiting.
Total Diabetic System.
This sort of damage isn't inevitable. You can take steps to help prevent sexual dysfunction from occurring or worsening.
* Talk to your doctor. Initially, you might be embarrassed to talk about sexual health which is natural. Doctors know that sexual dysfunction is a common diabetes-related problem, your doctor won't be surprised when you mention the topic. Talking to your doctor before a problem occurs to help you prevent or delay sexual hiccups. Your doctor can also help determine if the complications are a result of diabetes or another condition.
* Control your blood sugar. Good blood sugar control can prevent the nerve and blood vessel complications that lead to sexual dysfunction.
* Avoid tobacco. Smoking and other tobacco use cause blood vessels to narrow, contributing to blockages that can lead to complications. Smoking also can decrease nitric oxide levels.
* Avoid excessive alcohol. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can cause sexual dysfunction by damaging blood vessels. In general, for men that means no more than two alcoholic drinks a day, and for women, no more than one.
Knowing more about how diabetes-related complications can lead to sexual dysfunction may help you take measures to avoid the condition or prevent it from worsening. As these complications become more widely understood -- (thanks in part to mainstream media) -- it may become easier for you to discuss, just like any other medical condition.
The bottom line is that Nerve Damage is relevant to diabetes, it is very important that we take care of our bodies and make conscious decisions to take control of our health.
To your continued health.

[ BRAIN & LIVER DAMAGING HABITS.]

1. No Breakfast People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
7. Head covered while sleeping Sleeping with the head covered, increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver.
Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to "schedule."

Because:

Evening at 9 - 11pm : is the time for eliminating unnecessary/toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time a housewife is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on health.
Evening at 11pm - 1am: is the detoxification process in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state.
Early morning 1 - 3am: detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.
Early morning 3 - 5am: detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time. Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.
Morning 5 - 7am: detoxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel.
Morning 7 - 9am: absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for those who are sick. Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit. Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits, and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 - 10am rather than no meal at all.

TAKE CARE.

Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals. Aside from that, midnight to 4:00 am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood. Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late.

[ Winter Itch - Dry Skin.]

Winter is here so we have to take care of 'Winter Itch' especially for people with diabetes and dry skin. Not knowing anything about 'Winter Itch' I have had itching and the itch came only after midnight when I was just about to go into deep sleep.
At first I thought it must be some mosquito bite and rubbed my feet with another feet and it gave a good feeling. However it again started and this time it needed more rubbing to stop the itch but it never made me sleep till I applied a skin cream.
Next day I went to my doctor and told him that I had applied skin cream and showed him the cream tube wheather if it was OK to go ahead and do the same procedure if it happened in the night again.
Here are some tips the doctor told me which helped avoiding applying skin cream and stoping the 'Winter Itch'.
Do not try to wipe the water after bath but just mop it keeping the skin with moisture.
Keep a bottle of good moisture and immediately apply to the whole body before wrapping the towel to the waist.
Never take bath with very hot water and use a soft soap.
Before taking bath apply coconut oil on your dry scalp, message your head slowly with your fingers.
Cut and file your nails on your toes and fingers nicely.
You can take after consulting your doctor Vitamin B7 so as to avoid brittle nails.
Do not blow dry your hair during winter.
Use Beeswax on your lips if avoid chapped lips.
Wear only cotton socks and underwears
Drink water as much as possible up to 4:00PM

[ Obese,diabetic?.Watch your bones.]

New Delhi: Obesity and type 2 diabetes affect bone structure, formation and strength over time, thereby increasing bone fracture risk, says new study.
The researchers also found that exercise can not only prevent weight gain and diabetes but also increase bone strength."Researchers once thought obesity was protective of bone because with more body mass, individuals have more bone mass;more bone mass typically decreases risk of osteoporosis and associated fractures,"said Pam Hinton,Associate Professor at the University of Missouri in the US.
"What we have come to realise is that the bone of people with obesity and type 2 diabetes is not good, quality bone. These individuals have an increased risk of fractures;so that extra body weight is not protective"he said
For the study, the researchers allowed one group of rats to over eat and voluntarily exercise on running wheels.Another group of rats programed to over eat remained sedentary.
The researchers also had a control group of rats that remained sedentary but did not over eat
They studied bones from rats in three groups at different ages to determine how early in the development of obesity and diabetes the bone was affected negatively.
"as the rats continued to grow, all groups increased their bone mass, but the rats that were obese and sedentary did not accumulate as much bone mass relative to their body mass,"Professor Hinton said.
"So decreased bone formation, loss of bone mass and decreased bone strength all were present in the obese, diabetic, sedentary rats. However, the rats that exercised did not lose bone strength.Infact, the rats that ran on the wheels had stronger bones than the normal-weight controls,"he said.
The animals in the exercise group did not develop the same insulin resistance and diabetes
The finding appeared in the journal Metabolism.-IANS

[ Diabetes spreads in Southeast Asia.]

Diabetes is rapidly spreading in Southeast Asia as people embrace American fast foods, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and pizza. More Chinese adults who live in Singapore are dying of heart disease and developing type 2 diabetes than ever before, researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and the National University of Singapore reported in the journal Circulation.
The authors found that Chinese adults in Singapore who eat American-style junk foods twice a week had a 56% greater risk of dying prematurely form heart disease, while their risk of developing type 2 diabetes rose 27%, compared to their counterparts who "never touched the stuff". There was a 80% higher likelihood of dying from coronary heart disease for those eating fast foods four times per week.
Some facts and myths about diabetes.
Many presumed "facts" are thrown about in the paper press, magazines and on the internet regarding diabetes; some of them are, in fact, myths. It is important that people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, their loved ones, employers and schools have an accurate picture of the disease. Below are some diabetes myths:
People with diabetes should not exercise - NOT TRUE!! Exercise is important for people with diabetes, as it is for everybody else. Exercise helps manage body weight, improves cardiovascular health, improves mood, helps blood sugar control, and relieves stress. Patients should discuss exercise with their doctor first.
Fat people always develop type 2 diabetes eventually - this is not true. Being overweight or obese raises the risk of becoming diabetic, they are risk factors, but do not mean that an obese person will definitely become diabetic. Many people with type 2 diabetes were never overweight. The majority of overweight people do not develop type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a nuisance, but not serious - two thirds of diabetes patients die prematurely from stroke or heart disease. The life expectancy of a person with diabetes is from five to ten years shorter than other people's. Diabetes is a serious disease.
Children can outgrow diabetes - this is not true. Nearly all children with diabetes have type 1; insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas have been destroyed. These never come back. Children with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin for the rest of their lives, unless a cure is found one day.
Don't eat too much sugar, you will become diabetic - this is not true. A person with diabetes type 1 developed the disease because their immune system destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells. A diet high in calories, which can make people overweight/obese, raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, especially if there is a history of this disease in the family.
I know when my blood sugar levels are high or low - very high or low blood sugar levels may cause some symptoms, such as weakness, fatigue and extreme thirst. However, levels need to be fluctuating a lot for symptoms to be felt. The only way to be sure about your blood sugar levels is to test them regularly. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark showed that even very slight rises in blood-glucose levels significantly raise the risk of ischemic heart disease.
Diabetes diets are different from other people's - the diet doctors and specialized nutritionists recommend for diabetes patients are healthy ones; healthy for everybody, including people without the disease. Meals should contain plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and they should be low in salt and sugar, and saturated or trans fat. Experts say that there is no need to buy special diabetic foods because they offer no special benefit, compared to the healthy things we can buy in most shops.
High blood sugar levels are fine for some, while for others they are a sign of diabetes - high blood-sugar levels are never normal for anybody. Some illnesses, mental stress and steroids can cause temporary hikes in blood sugar levels in people without diabetes. Anybody with higher-than-normal blood sugar levels or sugar in their urine should be checked for diabetes by a health care professional. Diabetics cannot eat bread, potatoes or pasta - people with diabetes can eat starchy foods. However, they must keep an eye on the size of the portions. Whole grain starchy foods are better, as is the case for people without diabetes.
One person can transmit diabetes to another person - NOT TRUE. Just like a broken leg is not infectious or contagious. A parent may pass on, through their genes to their offspring, a higher susceptibility to developing the disease.
Only older people develop type 2 diabetes - things are changing. A growing number of children and teenagers are developing type 2 diabetes. Experts say that this is linked to the explosion in childhood obesity rates, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
I have to go on insulin, this must mean my diabetes is severe - people take insulin when diet alone or diet with oral or non-insulin injectable diabetes drugs do not provide good-enough diabetes control, that's all. Insulin helps diabetes control. It does not usually have anything to do with the severity of the disease.
If you have diabetes you cannot eat chocolates or sweets - people with diabetes can eat chocolates and sweets if they combine them with exercise or eat them as part of a healthy meal.
Diabetes patients are more susceptible to colds and illnesses in general - a person with diabetes with good diabetes control is no more likely to become ill with a cold or something else than other people. However, when a diabetic catches a cold, their diabetes becomes harder to control, so they have a higher risk of complications.
What is Metabolism?
METABOLISM is a body function that has to go on in your body till you are dead.It is needed in time of crisis when you go on hunger strike like so often goes on in India at the drop of a Cap.
What I say regarding Metabolism is if you take a meal that you have cooked and if it's around 1800 Calories and your activities till the next meal is anywhere around 1500 calories during digestion may be around 300 calories is used and there is no fat left in your body ( Example).
What is a Calorie?
A calorie is a measure of heat that is coming from what you eat when it's digested.Actually it's the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree celsius,1,000 calories is equal to 1 kilo calorie or 1 calorie
Like wise 1 gm of carbohydrate = 4 calories
like wise 1 gm of Fat = 9 calories.
Like wise 18 gm of Protein = 100 calories.

[ The ABO Blood Group System.]

There are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens – A and B – on the surface of red blood cells:
  • Group A – has only the A antigen on red cells (and B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group B – has only the B antigen on red cells (and A antibody in the plasma)
  • Group AB – has both A and B antigens on red cells (but neither A nor B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group O – has neither A nor B antigens on red cells (but both A and B antibody are in the plasma)
There are very specific ways in which blood types must be matched for a safe transfusion. See the chart below:

Blood type chart

B can donate red blood cells to B's and AB'sB Blood TypeB Blood Type
Group AB can donate to other AB's but can receive from all othersAB Blood TypeAB Blood Type

In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a third antigen called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent ( – ). In general, Rh negative blood is given to Rh-negative patients, and Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood may be given to Rh positive patients.
  • The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood type.
  • The universal plasma donor has Type AB blood type.

O positive is the most common blood type. Not all ethnic groups have the same mix of these blood types. Hispanic people, for example, have a relatively high number of O’s, while Asian people have a relatively high number of B’s. The mix of the different blood types in the U.S. population is:

Some patients require a closer blood match than that provided by the ABO positive/negative blood typing. For example, sometimes if the donor and recipient are from the same ethnic background the chance of a reaction can be reduced. That’s why an African-American blood donation may be the best hope for the needs of patients with sickle cell disease, 98 percent of whom are of African-American descent.

It’s inherited. Like eye color, blood type is passed genetically from your parents. Whether your blood group is type A, B, AB or O is based on the blood types of your mother and father.

* Note: If you have questions about paternity testing or about blood group inheritance, your primary care physician should be able to provide you with an appropriate referral. Testing difficulties can cause exceptions to the above patterns. ABO blood typing is not sufficient to prove or disprove paternity or maternity.

[ Fruits to Control Diabetes.]

There is a common misconception that fruits are not good for diabetics since they have sugar. Well, you should know what really matters is the glycemic index. And many fruits have low glycemic index (GI) and favorable for diabetics. Dr Pradeep Gadge, consultant diabetologist practising at various hospitals in Mumbai says that fruits like bananas, grapes, mangoes, custard apple, chickoos, apricots, blueberries, blackberries, oranges, kiwi fruits,Chiku can be enjoyed by diabetics, albeit in

limited amounts

. He also added it is important that

one should avoid having over-ripe fruits as they might not be good for the diabetic patients.

Here is a bunch of fruits pictures to help you fight diabetes.

Washington:A mysterious kidney that has killed over 20,000 people in Central America and has been observed in India and Sri Lanka may be caused by chronic, severe dehydration linked to globle climate change,a new study has found.

"This could be the first epidemic directly caused by global warming."said Richard J Johnson, professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine,US

"Some districts of Nicaragua have been called the "land of widows" due to the high mortally rates occurring among the male workers from chronic kidney disease" Johnson said.

The epidemic was first described in 2002 and has been dubbed Mesoamerican Nephropathy. It is most prevent among manual labourers on sugar cane plantations in this hotter, lower altitudes of Central America's Pacific Coast.

Researchers studied sugar cane workers in Nicaragua and El Salvador and found that the labourers routinely worked in conditions exceeding the recommended heat heat standards of the US.

Even though some of them drank up to two liters per hour, the researchers found they still suffered serious dehydration on a daily basis.

[ Chronic drowsiness can be treated ]

Are you nodding off at work? - Yoga can come to the rescue

Napping

Napping during the day sounds good once in a while but ignoring excessive sleepiness during working hours may have a negative impact on your health and life.A few changes in lifestyle can beat this problem.Ignoring this condition can impact work, relationship and social life, lead to stress, anxiety or depression, low energy, restlessness or agitation.A person may begin to think or speak slowly, have trouble remembering things or maintaining concentration.
Hypersomnia means excessive daytime sleepiness that interferes with everyday life.It can have many possible causes, including conditions such as narcolepsy, sleep apnoea or restless legs syndrome; severe sleep deprivation;depression;certain medications(such as tranquilizers); or drug and alcohol misuse.Identifying such cause at the earliest will give best results,"says Dr.George Dsouza, pulmonary and respiratory specialist and Dean,St John's Medical College.

A major condition that disrupts sleep during night is is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea(OSA),a condition where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, interrupting normal breathing. This condition which results in lack of OXYGEN,triggers your brain to pull you out of deep sleep - either to a lighter sleep or to wakefulness. These repeated sleep interruptions can make you feel very tired during day.You will usually have no memory of your interrupted breathing,so you may be unaware you have a problem unless a partner, friend or family member notices the symptoms while you sleep." says Dr.Dsouza.
Dr.Prashanth L K,consultant neurologist and movement disorders socialist,Apollo Hospital, opines that in older people, conditions like diabetes, prostate problems, uneasiness also may result in daytime sleepiness. In some cases certain kinds of medication may also affect sleep patterns at night.

For the young, drinking alcohol, coffee, energy drinks or staying up late at night due to technology fixation may cause such a condition.

Tests that can help

Dr.Prashanth L.K says,"Tests like Polysomnography can help rule out sleep disorders such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea.A patient is asked to stay in a special bedroom and observed from another room through the night.Electrodes are attached to the face, head and body to record brain waves, muscle activity, eye movement, breathing and snoring.Multiple sleep latency test follows the next day.A patient is asked to take several naps throughout the day just so doctors can see how long it takes them to fall asleep when instructed."

Yoga for better sleep

Dr.Arjunan Mooventhan, associate professor, department of naturopathy,SVYASA Yoga University, opines that regular yoga practice can help unwind patients suffering from insomnia or abnormal sleeping habits.Yoga helps unwind stress at the end of the day and induces better sleep at night. A good night's sleep really is within anyone's reach and the often recommended treatment is to establish relaxing bed time routine. The following Yoga stretches can help one to enjoy a peaceful sleep.

Cat stretch (Marjariasana):

Excellent stretch for spine flexibility. Also helps massage the digestive organs and improve digestion, there by helping you to sleep well. Also improves blood circulation and relaxes the mind.

Forward bend ( Hastapadasana):Helps stretch the back muscles, invigorates the nervous system by increasing blood supply, and makes the spine supple.

Butterfly pose(Buddha Konasana):This pose can help remove fatigue from long hours of standing or walking. Also a good stretch for inner thighs, groin and knees.

Child's pose(Buddha Konasana)

A deeply relaxing stretch for a back which also helps calm the nervous system so that you can sleep at peace.

Other tips to beat daytime sleep

Avoiding alcohol, caffeine and medications that make the conditions worse, sticking to bed time routine, and avoiding working at night or engaging in social activities that delay bedtime.

[ A Pain-free way to pump in insulin ]

At the second edition of TEDxBangalore, industrial designer presents Insulin Delivery System which needs no human Intervention

by Shyama Krishna Kumar

Queen's Road: Devina Kothari a Rajkot-based industrial designer,is set to revolutionise the way diabetics deal with their illness. The Insulin Delivery System she has designed automatically administers insulin,as per the requirement, into the patient's body through a pain-free closed-loop system, one that requires no human intervention once the device is attached to the body.

Speaking to City Express at the sidelines of TEDxBangalore at MLR convention Center,Whitefield,on Sunday,Devina explained how the suave-looking wearable tech makes the patient's life simpler." Athletes who are diabetic have to constantly rethink their agendas.A device like ours would automatically monitor their insulin levels and administer just the right right dosage that they need, essentially removing any threat of accidents.Children who have to self administer insulin when they are at school almost always get no privacy. They often use washrooms which are more often than not, unclean.A device like this which to your body would remove such complications,"she said.

The idea came to her when her diabetic uncle failed to respond to medications due to fluctuations in his glucose level. She realised that she could use technology to help people in similar predicaments."Statistics say that every fifth person in India is diabetic. This is a serious epidemic. And diabetics in turn leads to several other health issues,"she said.

The device has two components- a monitoring system and a diffusing system. The device compares the actual insulin level to the desired level, and pumps in the desired amount. The monitoring system has a biosensor that goes inside the body and moniters the blood glucose level. It transfers data in to the diffusing unit, which then transcodes it and provides the required amount of insulin. The device has a embedded GPS with a microprocessor,an LED display and a physical connector.
Insulin Delivery System also uses a micro needle, which makes the process pain free. The idea sprang to Devina's mind after she was bitten by a mosquito. the final design of the device, which took her years to complete, won Devina the Red Dot Award of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen,Essen,Germany, one of the oldest and most reputed design institutions in the world.

Devina is now in talks with several pharmaceutical companies to release the product. The process of acquiring patents and distribution rights is under way."If I need to get this device to every patient, I will need to work on its cost as well, which means I need to scale this thing up.And I plan to do that by making the device do more than just help diabetes patients,I want to reach out to people with different kinds of ailments that need self-administrating health devices."she said.

[ The Finger - first Alarm ]

A spike in crimes against crime against the elderly is what got this team of five students to think about the elderly - soon they built the Health Monitoring System,in which an alarm can be triggered through a device attached to the finger. The Health Monitoring System, explains Kiran Thomas Varghese checks if vital body stats are abnormal changes in pulse rate acquired from the sensors to the wireless alarm and display unit thereby enabling the caretaker to reach the patient faster. The display unit immediately alerts the caretaker of the change in condition ,preventing serious injury."This is achieved by detecting the heart rate and temperature of the patient"says Kiran

Explaining further,The Mechatronics students add,"We were looking into doing some projects which could help people,so we approached our professor Dr.Dinakaran who told about a problem that he faced at home.He told us that he had to wake up in the middle of the night to check on his parents,in order to sleep in peace"

According to statistics as many as 70% of the aged depend on others for their day to day maintenance. The current pulse monitor which are available in the market do not address the specific need with the alarm mechanism.A major thing that they claim,is the really low price, making this accessible to all."We have spent about Rs.15,000/- on the project. The cost were a bit high as we had to import many of the components. But the market price of each unit will be about Rs.2000/-.Once we start production we should be able to bring down the cost to less than Rs.15,00/-,"Srinivasan Ranjit, another team member adds.

Explaining its working Santhosh Kumar E says. The heart beat is recorded using a pulse Oximetry Sensor, which processes the heart rate.If it is too low or too high the processor transmits the fact to the receiving unit will generate the alarm."What's next?Hrishikesh Krishnan says,"We have planed on a limited test launch of 50 pieces to various hospitals and map its performance in the real world. We have plans to upgrade the device in future to be used along with android application."

Right now they're really waiting for the roll out, reveals Kishoth Geethan, which is a day that can't come soon enough for them!

Tooth sensitivity.

Do you feel a twinge of discomfort when you crunch down a cube of ice or experience excruciating pain after having a sip of hot tea or coffee? If Yes,you have sensitive teeth. Teeth become sensitive when a;
NERVERE
is exposed.When a tooth cracks due to worn off ENAMEL or Gums recede., the nerves are exposed leading,to extra sensitive teeth. Here are a few ways to avoid aggravation;
Watch what you eat and drink,Avoid eating acidic food and beverages on a regular basis as they can cause your your enamel to erode.

Minimise intake of soda, wine, coffee, energy drinks and fruit juice.Consume tomatoes and citrus fruits in moderation. If you crave for something acidic, drink through a straw to minimise exposure afterwords rinse your mouth with water to neutralize the pH.Wait 30 minutes before brushing.

Calcium is the prime mineral for preventing tooth problems. Dairy products are a great source of calcium, along with veggies likebroccoli, nuts and almonds.

Use a soft bristled tooth brush.Harder tooth brushes can contribute to receding gums, which expose dentin-the tissue that forms the core of each tooth. It can lead to PAIN

Opt for a desensitising toothpaste instead of a normal one and a mouth rinse that contains STANNOUS FLUORIDE.tHERE SPECIAL FORMULA blocks the tubes in the teeth that are connected to the nerves, reducing PAIN.

A sensitive tooth may be irritated if you brush with cold water. So wash with warm water NOT HOT WATER.

Do not go for any whitening treatments as they contain abrasive ingredients that increase tooth sensitivity and cause pain, especially when used often. Whiten up no only once in 6 months.

What you need to Know about Diabetes.

I have read some where and remember that a study on diabetics in the next 2 decades type 2 diabetes will take 100 million people in India. The awareness of this awesome tragedy is poor and only few or less pharmacologists corporates keep pouring money in advertisements in English News Papers and TV media. What to do to prevent diabetics in taking free lodging in your body. A few simple changes in your daily life can prevent you allowing free lodging to diabetics

DIABETES IS SUGAR IN EXCESS AND RISK TO YOUR BODY.

Diabetes is a disease that will not allow your body to completely utilize the sugar or glucose that you include in your meal.Know your meal and avoid sugar content in your meal.Your body is made to do this work but it cannot do overtime to remove sugar from your body. You allow it to do overtime it will until it can and stop doing overtime.Your body's PANCREAS produces naturally when ever excesses sugar is found in your body. However it is not a organ that is like others. It is a self controlled organ which will refuse to produce insulin that neutralizes sugar in limited excess quantity.

How to know this PAN NUMBER of PANCREAS like BP

It has no number but it has signs of it's condition and you ignore those conditions because of your attitude to your freedom on your body with out any restriction. What are those signs, they are:-
1
Prolonged symptoms of Thirst for Water.
2
Excessive urination
3
Blurry Vision
4
An irritable disposition
5
Tingling sensation or numbness in your hand or feet
6
Woods not healing
7
Your Medical History if you keep
8
Not having a family Doctor.
9
Go to a honest doctor if you are unwell.
YOUR DIABETIC MENU.
A drop of 7 to 10% of your weight and the chances of your getting diabetics gets 50% less further 50% may be possible if you have diet discipline and avoid processed carbs, sugary drinks, trans and saturated fats and red and processed meat.Try a Diet expert for your best health.Do yoga after taking a course in ART OF LIVING FOUNDATION camp or Ashram in your city.
USE YOUR OWN INSULIN.
Walking 8 KM per day keeps diabetics normal with out any medication as I have tried it myself but to walk 8KM daily you need a place and in India we do not have parks such as Cubbon Park and even there it is hard to get KM of road with out speeding cars driven by young drivers. You need to carry some candy of your liking in case your glucose level comes down and you feel so hard to walk and sweat.Consult your doctor. As I have already mentioned you need to have a good faithful doctor as your family doctor.

My Worries.

Another friend of mine who was diabetic while we were having a buffet lunch was eating much less than what I had on my plate.I asked him why he is dieting when he is normal. He said he is over weight by 2 kg and needs to reduce his weight since he is diabetic.I asked him if he will get rid of diabetics if he reduces by 2 kg.He said no I will keep my diabetes under control. My immediate concern was what was my weight.I asked my friend how did you know by reducing your weight you can control your diabetes. He said his doctor told him so.I did not like to ask further questions since I had a fear he would ask me if I was diabetic. The next day I informed the security that as soon as the doctor comes he must see me. What ever the doctor thought of my strange request I did not ask but I told him that I wanted to know my weight and how much was more that was required to be reduced to keep my weight to diabetic standards. With out a thought to my question he said reduce by 3 kg in next 3 months.I calculated 3 months 3 Kg and each month 1 kg and 30 days 33.33 gms/day.Now I needed a weighing machine to weigh my food intake when ever I had to eat.I told my wife to reduce 33 gms of rice in my food daily. She said get me a weighing machine and I will do it.I could not find a weighing machine with 1 gm division and I had to go to Bombay so I thought I will get it from there.I went to Bombay did my work had my drinks and dinner to my hearts content as I would have to reduce 33 gms after returning back to my place.I had no time to buy a 1 kg weighing machine.

I used to bring some gifts to my kids when ever I visited Bombay and as soon as my driver kept my suitcases and left my children opened the suit case took their gifts and drinking a can of Coke came to thank me.My wife asked me if I had bought the weighing machine.I kept mum she kept mum.

I got Diabetes.

I had a Doctor to treat the workers in my textile mill and he was checking my blood for FBS every month as I was not Diabetic but my mother was and I had all the required life style required to get diabetes I kept this practice faithfully. My doctor went on reporting that my blood glucose showed no sign of diabetes. I never thought that at the age of 54 I would become diabetic and was happy I had screwed diabetes.

I was infected by UTI when I went to a dirty toilet to pee as there was no other toilet in that place.I did not know that toilets were UTI friendly.I had to get my urine tested for finding the sensitive antibiotic for the bacteria I was infected and my friend's doctor arranged to test and that doctor suspected me to be a diabetic. The next thing was the glucose test where you go to the clinic in empty stomach at 7:00AM and give your first sample of urine and drink water after putting in your mouth 50 gms of glucose and go on giving samples for next 4 hours every hour. The final 4th test must show the desired result of less than 80gms/dl.It did not show and how much it was and my friend did not tell.I had come home as I was hungry and had my lunch of Rice a main dish with other items and slept.

The phone rang and my son as usual always used to grab it first since his girl friend used to call him anytime she liked. It was my friend, my son's girl friend father who had called and told my son that I had joined the diabetic club.My son shouted 'Mom daddy is diabetic'.I heard his shout. That was a shock of my life.I immediately thought of my mother who was diagnosed as having diabetic and was forced to eat only wheat rice. That was only the major prescription I remember and the thought of eating wheat rice or broken wheat made me sick and depressed.Further she lived only up to 65 years and this thought made me more depressed and fear gripped my mind solid. My son was still in college and was just getting in to pre graduation.I was 54 and I added 20 years guessing the number of years it would take to make both my son and daughter as graduates in some professional course and get both of them married. The total number 74 gave me shivers. How am I going to live that long was my big worry.
